Financial Instrument Business Information Model (FIBIM)

The Financial Instrument Business Information Model (FIBIM) was defined by ISO TC68/SC4/Working Group 11 (WG11) to provide a standardised description of a security throughout its lifecycle, comprised of completely defined data elements and the relationship among these data elements.

Asset classes in scope are Equity, Debt, Options, Futures, Entitlements and Collective Investment Vehicles. For all these asset classes, WG11 identified and defined the necessary business components and elements, as well as the relationships between components.

The FIBIM was incorporated in the ISO 20022 business model in 2008 to serve as a common basis for the development of all ISO 20022 securities message definitions.

Another purpose of the FIBIM is to help standardising database design and structure of the "securities master files" maintained by each securities industry player and by the suppliers of securities information. Such standardization should facilitate exchange of information and its processing by applications.

The FIBIM is expected to be progressively complemented as a result of the continuous development of ISO 20022 messages that may require additional financial instrument characteristics. The ISO 20022 Registration Management Group will also define a maintenance process that will permit to propose updates to the ISO 20022 business model independently of the development of ISO 20022 messages.

The FIBIM.zip contains a series of class diagrams in .wmf format and corresponding Excel spreadsheets giving the definitions of the business components and business elements/associations shown on each diagram.
